Mandating Features

Gary Shapiro from the Consumer Electronics Association on the RIAA and NAB’s wish that the Federal Government force Apple and other companies to include FM receivers in their products:

Rather than adapt to the digital marketplace, NAB and RIAA act like buggy-whip industries that refuse to innovate and seek to impose penalties on those that do.

I don’t think forcing a legacy technology into digital media products is going to save radio. Radio, as it was known for the past 70 years, is dead. Companies like Pandora and Rdio are the new broadcasting format.

And will the RIAA and NAB pay for the chips and offset the design costs?

Doubtful.
