Star Wars Trilogy Coming to Blu-Ray

by Christopher Paul on August 14, 2010

From the It’s About Time Department comes word of Lucasfilms releasing the original Star Wars Trilogy on Blu-Ray. Now before you get too excited, its the “special edition” released in 1997 so don’t expect Han to shoot first like the true original did. But having the movies on Blu-Ray is better than not having them at all.

According to the press release, there are even more deleted scenes including one from Return of the Jedi.

Star Wars fans were treated to a glimpse of bonus material, in the form of a long-lost deleted scene from Return of the Jedi. The scene has long been talked about online — a sequence that depicts Luke Skywalker assembling his new, green-bladed lightsaber prior to infiltrating Jabba the Hutt’s palace. After completing the Jedi weapon, Luke stashes it in R2-D2’s dome. What makes the Jedi deleted clip so remarkable is that it made it all the way to postproduction before it was cut, so it is a rare example of a cut scene with completed visual effects and music.

Because they’re still working on some of the extras, it won’t be out until 2011. In the meantime, pick up a “Han Shot First” t-shirt from Think Geek to show Lucas he should spend the time and money fixing his mistake and include the right Han/Greedo altercation scene for Star Wars purists.
