Champion Probabilities

My father-in-law, one of the wisest men I know, said to me recently that it is extremely hard to win the Super Bowl. With 32 teams – all of which have changing rosters year to year – it is hard predict who will win it all at the end of the season. When he said that, I never really thought about it in that way but he’s right. It’s hard – even if you’re rated the best in the league, the odds are not in your favor.

Even harder, sometimes, its hard to quantify exactly how hard it is and put that figure into perspective. Which is why I was pleasantly surprised to see this visualization on championship probabilities. And as you can see from chart above, you can see even the best team in the NFL has about an 8% chance to win the Super Bowl. 8%! If you’re not the bext team, you certainly have an uphill battle. I’m afraid to say that my team, the New York Giants, have less than a 3% chance.

It’s going to be a loooong season.
