Essential iPhone Apps for Visiting NYC

by Christopher Paul on September 8, 2010

I think New York City is the greatest city in the world. Yes, I live & work there so I am biased a bit. But of the major cities I’ve been to around the world, it still is my favorite. From the food, nightlife, art, and culture, New York has it all for everyone. its no wonder why people visit from all over the world.

When visiting, there are a few iPhone apps everyone should use. Mashable does a good job recommending nine free apps to download to better explore everything New York has to offer. There are a few paid apps I’d also recommend you get but the best of them happens to be Exit Strategy NYC (screenshot above); I mentioned it along with NYCmate a few months back and I think either of those two should be downloaded by anyone who wants to navigate around town as well as a native.

The list that Mashable is pretty good, though. I’ve tried a few and I can say they are some of the best free NYC related apps around. The apps I haven’t downloaded yet (but will soon) are iParks NY and Bookzee. iParks NY looks great for learning more about what New York’s massive parks have to offer. And Bookzee will help you find that book you want right away in any of NYC’s many libraries. Of course, the NYPL will move books from anywhere in their system to your “home” location. But if you need that book or DVD right away, Bookzee is the way to go.

If you have any other apps – free or otherwise – that any New Yorker (native or just visiting) should have on their iPhone (or Android), let me know in the comments because I’m always looking for good NYC related apps.
