New York City Gets New Area Code

by Christopher Paul on April 17, 2011

The Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, and Staten Island get a new area code – 929.

From the NY Times:

Upsides: palindromic, easy to remember; spells out WAX. If we owned a depilatory salon we would rush out to reserve (929) 669-2963: Wax On Wax Off.

Downside: When Grandma calls from her rotary phone, she will have to wait even longer for the dial to spring back — 9 plus 2 plus 9 equals 20 clicks, more than any other of the city’s area codes. She might make that I’m-leaving-you-my-entire-Hummel-figurine-collection call to your cousin in 313 instead.

I’m not sure about your Grandma, but mine uses her cell phone to dial me. She ditched her rotary phone 35 years ago. 929 does have a nice ring to it.

Yes… I said that.
