“Weird Al” Releases Lady Gaga Parody

by Christopher Paul on April 21, 2011

“Weird Al” approached Lady Gaga asking to do a parody of her song, “Born This Way.” Before she would give her permission, however, she asked he record the song for her to hear. I guess that’s not usually something he does but he went along with the request and recorded it. But Gaga dismissed it without saying a word.

So “Weird Al” did what anyone would do and released it anyway. Parodies are considered fair use and, while it’s nice that he asks for permission, he doesn’t need it. After he posted a link to it on Twitter, Lady Gaga changed her mind and gave permission to release the song and it will now appear on his next album (which I’ll be pre-ordering).

I wonder if it had anything to do with looking like an absolute hypocrite to deny a fellow artist the right to express himself when she is always fighting for the same thing. Especially when she’s a copy and paste artist herself. Or maybe her manager didn’t let Lady Gaga know the song was done like Al says. Either way, it’s over and we’ve got another “Weird Al” album coming out soon!
