Is There A Formula For A Hit Song?

by Christopher Paul on June 23, 2011

Thomas Engelhardt and Shaun Ellis, Rutgers University students, looked at hundreds of songs and mapped qualities about them to see if there was a formula for creating a hit song.

They found the average song has 120 beats per minute, 4.5 minutes in length, and is loud — a horrible trend that started with the CD (loudness different from volume). There is so much detail in their analysis and a wealth of visual data to justify their findings.
