The Unseen Bean: Roasting Coffee In The Dark

by Christopher Paul on January 1, 2013

Gerry Leary is blind. But he runs The Unseen Bean – a coffee shop where he roasts his own beans with just his ears and nose. He was featured in Dark Rye, a food magazine published by Whole Foods (which I’ve since subscribed).

In the video, Gerry mentions coffee is a lot like wine. Yields from the same farm will carry from year to year – something he can pick up on with his other heightened senses. I never thought of it like that before but it’s reasonable to expect seasonal variations in anything grown. To be able to detect those subtle differences must be amazing.
