Typeface Used By Influential Film Makers

by Christopher Paul on September 14, 2012

I've been researching fonts quite a bit over the last few months and years. Chalk it up to having a family who's into design and typeface. I've also come to appreciate indie films and film makers. So when I saw Flavorwire looked into the two together, I had to share it.

I think I'm most appreciative of Wes Anderson's custom font commissioned for his film, Moonrise Kingdom, but there are great observations about Woody Allen, Alfred Hitchcock, and Stanley Kubrick.

The Entitlement of Apple Users

by Christopher Paul on September 14, 2012

With confusion and anger towards Apple's new iPhone connector and the accessories needed to match it up with 30 pin dock, I've felt that people somehow have a sense of entitlement towards Apple. They need to get over that. Apple might be passionate about their products and the process that goes into them but they don't owe anyone anything.

I trust they won't make egregiously stupid decisions but if they make one and it changes something that existed before that, they don't owe it to anyone to maintain that previous state. Look at the old processors. I'm sure there are PowerPC based Macs out there running strong but Apple doesn't support them. I'm sure there are iPhone 3Gs out there but you can't get every iOS feature on those models (if at all).

I almost equate drama surrounding the dock connector to be another antennagate. I say almost because, this time, people should know what they're getting; before, one could argue, they didn't know about reception "issues" that turned out to be non-issues in the end.

This is one of those non-issues that everyone knows about in advance.

What Selling Out Pre-Order Inventory Really Means

by Christopher Paul on September 14, 2012

While I'm an Apple fan and I did get up at 3 AM to order an iPhone 5 for my wife and I (who are "struggling" with just an iPhone 4), I wanted to say something about the time it took to sell out pre-order inventory.

People have said the iPhone 4S sold out in 22 hours last year – which, if I recall, was faster than the iPhone 4. This year, reports are indicate the iPhone 5 sold out in an hour which makes people think it will be tremendously popular and much more so than previous generations.

And while I believe that could be true, time to sell out (as I'm calling it though it sounds shady) is not an indicator of success at all. If anything, it could underscore poor yield rates, incorrect forecasts, or the shifting of production to more and different markets at once.

When you read the hype about Apple selling out their inventory, don't rush to any conclusions – especially those that use it to prop up Apple fanboys. It's too complex a problem to draw those kind of conclusions.

Selling out pre-order inventory means nothing.

Apple’s Insult? Really?

by Christopher Paul on September 13, 2012

I find Andrew Leonard's gripe about the new iPhone cable far more insulting than the need for a new cable. How dumb does he suppose his readership is?

First, it's a cable and it comes with the phone.

Second, where was he when Blackberry moved from mini USB to micro USB? Where was the outrage that all my existing chargers and cables at the time didn't work?

Third, if someone's income is down for the year, a $29 adapter will not be their concern after spending a minimum of $199 plus any monthly carrier fees. How can he even say that with a straight face? If someone doesn't have the money for a $29 adapter or a $39 replacement cable, they shouldn't be buying any new phone let alone a $199 one.

Fourth, my Sony Dream Machine has a tape deck. How dare someone come out with a new way of transferring music to my speakers with a new format! And shame on Sony for making my Dream Machine obsolete with a CD player version. Life is hard enough; having to deal with a newer, better, replacement is just the last straw in unforgivable treatment by ever changing technology. Let me remind others that the Sony Dream Machine is an overpriced speaker which he has no problem giving his children. Because, you know, the cost.

Finally, did he honestly start his article by talking about war, death, the future of our country, and income inequality only to say one of the most outrageous stories of the week was the dock connector?? What an asshole! You just insulted half the population of the world with that introduction.

Am I looking forward to having to repopulate my spare cables? No.

But a new cable isn't the end of the world as it is for some in the war ravaged countries he talks about as being less important. Apple's first cable wasn't an industry standard and people did just fine. If you don't want to buy an adapter for your shiny new iPhone, don't buy the new iPhone. Otherwise, go back to your cushy desk and buy your kids more expensive junk they don't need and deal with it.

3 AM

by Christopher Paul on September 13, 2012

3 AM.

Not a Matchbox 20 (or is it Twenty, now?) song. It's the time on Friday morning that Verizon Wireless will start taking orders for the iPhone 5.

I agree with Stephen, I'm going to be tired.
